So both Jani and Meghan reviewed my work. For the most part it seemed that my assessments were ok though there was some questions in relation to ELL learners and the amount of work that I give them. It was mentioned that I could make some of the assessments harder or easier based on the take home questions. From my own experiences with my current students is that because they are taking a lot of tests throughout the year, examples being AP, SAT, TOEFL, ACT and others, if I assign too much homework it does not get done. But I will take into consideration their suggestions. In general it does seem the take home test is where I received the most criticism. It’s something I am trying for the first time. A lot of the criticism seems to based around how much time I give the students to work on the assessment.
Normally when assessing my students and how well my assignments work and lecturing work what I do is assign a short five to ten question quiz as well as have a discussion about what we have gone over in class. An example of the first one would be as follows.
1.
Who founded Islam?
2.
What are the two main branches of Islam?
3.
What holy site do Muslims go to in Jerusalem?
4.
What holy book do Muslims use?
5.
In what country did Islam originate from?
This quiz was used for my senior 1 students and for the most part they could answer the questions, but to perfectly honest for them if it doesn’t involve China they tend not care sometimes. As for the second question I gave a lecture on Calvinism and what they thought about it. They had hard time believing that it was one of the more popular forms of Protestantism. I also normally due these assessments a week after.
After I get the results back from these two assessments then I will look at how I am teaching them and decided if it is working or not. If it is not working then I will come up with some new ideas and strategies for teaching them. A lot of time it is just looking at what is working and doing that or if not then I will look online for new ideas on how to make my classes better.
